Imperial County residents may be weary of the warnings from Sacramento regarding the state budget crisis. But cuts to the state budget that will impact schools and social services are real, and they will potentially have a huge impact on Imperial County.

Five of the six ballot measures designed to provide relief for the California budget went down in flames in yesterday's special election. According to the Imperial County Registrar of Voter's office, less than 20 percent of eligible voters in the county cast ballots in the special election.

Unlike the other five propositions on the May 19 special ballot, Prop. 1F, a measure limiting legislators' salaries when the budget is not balanced, seems very likely to pass.

California voters will decide if they want to pull money from the lottery, tobacco taxes, and income tax revenue currently earmarked for mental health programs to balance the state budget when they vote on Propositions 1C, 1D, and 1E on Tuesday, May 19.
