Calexico Unified School District - Earthquake Update
All of the Calexico Unified School District’s schools and facilities remain closed. As tremors continue, teams made up of District, state, and local experts continue to assess the extent of damage at all District facilities.
District Superintendent Dr. Christina Luna said that the District’s number one goal is the safety of our students and staff. Therefore, she stressed that the District must first ensure that those classrooms and the surrounding District property are structurally sound. Until further notice, the District is asking staff, students and the community to stay off of school grounds.
California Emergency Management Agency (CalEMA) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are assisting us in the recovery process. The District is working with these two agencies to assure that it meets the State and Federal criteria for the recovery process. The damage our District sustained is substantial; therefore, it is critical that we follow the guidelines to ensure a viable recovery.
As a result of the ongoing current inspection results, Calexico Unified School District will not be able to open its school sites next week. Student safety is of the upmost importance; therefore, sites cannot be opened partially either. ALL SCHOOL SITES WILL NOT OPEN UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.
As we continue to work to make our schools safe and ready for students, we will keep the school community as well as the community at large apprised of our progress. We will do everything in our power to return our students to their instructional programs as soon as possible.
The District will also continue to keep staff, parents, and the community informed of the status of each school through updates on the District’s website (www.calexico.k12.ca.us), information posted at the District office, and updates provided to local media. Parents are encouraged to regularly check one or more of these sources for the latest information on their child’s school. Parents may also obtain information by contacting the automated Information Phone Line at 760.768.3888.
